Qualified with an MA Honours Degree in Law from Cambridge University in 1971. Qualified as a Solicitor with Cleaver Fulton & Rankin, Belfast, where he was a partner from 1977 to 1997. Since 1998 he has practised on his own account as Ian Dawson & Co., Solicitors, Armagh.
Responsible for Wills, Probates, Administration of Estates, and book keeping. Commenced work with Peel & McRoberts Solicitors Armagh in 1960, transferred to Cleaver Fulton & Rankin in 1982 and transferred again to Ian Dawson & Co., in 1998.

In 1982 the Belfast firm of Cleaver Fulton & Rankin Solicitors took over the long established Armagh Solicitor’s practices of Peel & McRoberts, Monroe & Anderson and Crozier & Emerson. Ian Dawson was a partner in Cleaver Fulton & Rankin from 1977 to 1997 and had charge of its branch office in Armagh. In 1998 Cleaver Fulton & Rankin disengaged from Armagh, Ian Dawson ceased to be a partner in Cleaver Fulton & Rankin, and personally took over that firm’s operation in Armagh, practising as Ian Dawson & Co
